SHIP ROCK (TSÉ BITʼAʼÍ)
“Ship Rock” or “Tsé Bit’a’í” (rock with wings) is a striking feature of the northern New Mexico landscape. It is a sacred site to the Navajo (Diné), and features prominently in their mythology. According to one legend, after being transported to the land by a great bird, Diné lived on the top of the monadnock, coming down to plant and water fields. During a storm lightning destroyed the trail and the people were stranded. The ghosts (or chindi) of the dead still haunt the mountain; climbing has been banned so the chindi are not disturbed.
We timed our visit for sunset, searching out a safe and respectful place to pause and take in the view. While we saw a few groups of people hiking up towards the mountain, we chose to remain on the outskirts, respectfully out of the sacred grounds.
