REFLECTION
I used to walk through the 9/11 memorial garden every morning on my way to work. An odd crush of tourists, commuters, and somber ceremony. It is difficult to walk past the chasm in the ground and not remember those moments. How many lives changed when those buildings fell. A common conversation when September rolls around - where were you?
Surrounded by the trees of the memorial garden, it is somehow a quiet space, despite the bustle of the city. Only later did I learn the whole space is also a huge hazard for migrating birds, drawn in by the water and the greenery and later confused by the trees reflecting in the huge panels of glass all around.
"Reflecting Absence" is by architect Michael Arad and landscape architect Peter Walker, twin memorial pools at the site of the North and South World Trade Center Towers.
