IOWA PURPLE MARTIN
Almost all Purple Martins in the East Coast live in birdhouses put up just for them. Some suspect that their declining numbers are due to competition with starlings for nest sites. At this nesting box in Raccoon River Park the sky was full of Purple Martins flitting around. I’d traveled to the lake in search of herons, but spent most of my time lying under the box watching them swoop and play.
